IGPP researchers Mark Zumberge and Glenn Sasagawa
and their student Scott Nooner have been honored by the
Society of
Exploration Geophysicists (SEG). Their manuscript titled "A New Sea-floor Gravimeter"
(co-authored with Wayne Crawford, Ola Eiken and Tokjell Stenvold) has
been awarded SEG's "Best Paper in Geophysics" for 2003.
The paper resulted from their collaboration with the Norwegian oil
company, Statoil,
to monitor a natural gas reservoir beneath the
North Sea using gravity and pressure measurements. The work has been
ongoing for six years and it is anticipated that it will continue far
into the future.
Geophysics is the premier journal of the geophysical industry, and
the Best Paper in Geophysics is selected by the Editor for
consideration as a candidate for the award. Recognized minimum
requirements are permanent interest, form and readability, and
potential for the advancement of the geophysical profession.
The official presentation takes place in Denver at the
SEG Annual Meeting October 10-15.
