IGPP Virtual Seminar Series 2021: Tim Jones

IGPP is pleased to invite you to join its Winter 2021 Virtual Seminar Series presentation featuring Tim Jones. Dr. Jones's talk, "Lithospheric Recycling: Effects on Mantle Structure and Composition" will be available via Zoom on Tuesday, February 23, 2021, starting at 12:00pm.  The seminar will be hosted on Zoom link here (password = mantle).

Date: Tuesday, February 23, 2021
Time: 12:00 pm, Pacific Time

Note: This meeting will be recorded. Please make sure that you are comfortable with this before registering.

Abstract: The formation of oceanic lithosphere is, by volume, the most significant ongoing process of chemical differentiation on Earth. Although it has been widely studied, its impact on the long-term evolution of our planet is still underappreciated. At least that is the argument I will make in this talk. Using numerical simulations of mantle dynamics, together with seismological and geochemical data, I will examine three problems in the evolution of Earth’s structure and composition. And in each case, I will argue that the process of creating, subducting and destroying oceanic lithosphere offers a plausible solution.
